Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass

The Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass has been performed for more than 30 years, with advances in technology making it safe and effective. Dr. Lavin will begin by creating a small pouch by dividing the upper end of the stomach, restricting food intake. Next, the pouch is connected downstream in the small intestine. The small stomach pouch causes the patient to feel full with significantly less food intake.

Most patients lose 60-80% of excess body weight using this minimally invasive weight loss procedure. Additionally, studies have found that this procedure has resolved type 2 diabetes in over 80% of patients, resolved high blood pressure in nearly 70%, improved sleep apnea is over 80%, and improved high cholesterol in 95%.

A Patient’s Journey Throughout the Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass

Our Patient’s First Step

  • Our patient’s first step is to call our office and speak with a Patient Advocate. Our Patient Advocates are advocacy experts who help patients secure financing, insurance approval and explain our cash pay options.

Pre-Procedure Clinic Visit

  • During the initial clinic visit, our patients meet with one of our nurse practitioners to determine whether any pre-operative testing is needed prior to surgery. Pre-operative tests are sometimes necessary to make sure our patients are healthy enough to undergo a procedure.
  • Following the initial clinic visit, our patients will be assigned a case manager. Our case managers answer patient questions and discuss any concerns prior to surgery.

The Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Procedure

  • Our patients meet with Dr. Lavin or one of our nurse practitioners in clinic approximately 7-10 days prior to their procedure (special arrangements are made for our traveling patients).
  • The Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass takes between 45-90 minutes. Our patients remain in the recovery room for 1-2 hours and typically begin walking the hallways and drinking liquids around that same time. Patients are usually discharged the next morning.

Follow-Up

  • Our patients follow-up with Dr. Lavin or one of our nurse practitioners periodically to insure healthy weight loss goals are met.

What are the advantages of a Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass?

  • Often results in significant long-term weight loss (on average 60 to 80 percent excess weight loss)
  • Dramatic improvement or resolution of diabetes
  • Restricts the amount of food that can be consumed
  • Significantly reduces hunger and cravings

What are the risks of a Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass?

As with any surgery, there are risks associated with the procedure; however, the health benefits as well as quality of life improvements far outweigh any risk of complications. Dr. Lavin will personally discuss the risks with each patient prior to surgery.
